Situational Leadership: The Need of the Hour Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:32 AM PDT This story will illustrate how the Swiss knife got an edge. After the 9/11, terror attack on the USA, security was tightened all over the world and security at all airports would not allow the passengers to carry Swiss knife. These were tough times for the makers of the Swiss knife and the iconic product was about to bring the company on the verge of a financial disaster. These Swiss knives dominated the market sales, but post 9/11, their sales slowed down. At this point of time, the entrepreneur leadership came in to action, situational leadership demanded that the company in order to survive must diversify in the present circumstances, take bold and innovative decisions, keep up high morale of their workers, and the show must go on, in spite of the adverse circumstances. The company decided to diversify in to new products like watches, travel gears, but the philosophy, or the core mantra of the product design remained the same. To create products with the same range of functionality as the Swiss knives, and today over a fourth of the sales comes from the watches and travel gear. The moral of this story is- adversity in the corporate world can turn in to an opportunity, provided you are willing to adapt to the present situations. |
