Mobile Gaming In The 21st Century [BRIEF] Posted: 29 Jul 2012 11:43 AM PDT
Nature of Mobile GamingThis is partly because the nature of mobile gaming lends itself to being a profitable enterprise – distribution overheads are extremely low, development needn't be done from scratch, as many of the games and Apps are modifications of existing products, and as the smartphone and tablet markets continue to grow, so too will the desire for products that use their capabilities to the fullest. Where once mobile gaming was seen as the option for people so addicted to home-based gaming that they couldn't be without some kind of console, is it possible that in future the reverse will be true? The figures for the growth of mobile gaming in the 21st century are certainly compelling: in 2010, the mobile entertainment industry as a whole was worth $33billion, against conventional video-game takings of $74billion – impressive, for a product and platform that has been around barely a third as long. At Garter Inc, a technology advisory firm, principal research analyst Tuong Nguyen said in 2011, "Mobile games are the most downloaded application category across most application stores. For this reason, mobile gaming will continue to thrive as more consumers expand their use of new and innovative portable connected devices." With the new iPad and Sony Vita adding to the ways to play games on the go, this is surely a market that can only get bigger.
