How Virtual Private Networks Can Protect Your Mobile Device Posted: 03 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST Needing a safe way to communicate through the World Wide Web has never been more crucial. You no longer need a computer to log on. Your handheld mobile device can fit in your pocket and go pretty much everywhere with you, which means you're that much more vulnerable to hackers since you're spending more time on these networks. There are several ways to safeguard yourself, however, and here's a good one to read up on: VPNs. 1. First of All, What IS a VPN and What Will it Help You Do?Technology isn't immobile like it used to be. These days, it goes where we go. It's fairly easy to set up your electronic device at a coffee shop or someone else's office and connect to the internet so that you can share information; but you must do so safely. No matter where you're plugging in from, you should always seek out a secure way to reach your network. Virtual private networks do just this. They provide connections between devices that keep your information encrypted, so that the only people who can reach that data are the ones you want to. VPNs can also keep your IP addresses hidden. Networks are not only password protected, but they also require a PIN. What's more, the PIN changes every 30 seconds, making it even harder for unwelcomed visitors to eavesdrop. Another bonus? VPNs make it possible for you to bypass certain censors and filters that your government is placing on your internet activity, since you can even obtain an IP address that appears to be from another country! 2. Knowing How Different VPNs Will Work for YouThere are many virtual private network providers, so it's important to know the distinction. For example, there is a very basic kind of VPN that only runs at the application level, meaning that it will only protect—for example—the internet browser that you're running it in. For instance, if you use a VPN for Internet Explorer, it only applies to your activity in Internet Explorer. Anything done outside of IE is still exposed. Other virtual private networks provide more widespread security, though. As an example, AnchorFree's Hotspot Shield, a crowd favorite, monitors all internet activity. It's already available for Apple iOS devices, and Androids are next. Of course, which kind of VPN you choose to utilize will depend largely on what kind of web surfer you are; but obviously, you want to cover all of your bases. 3. More on How VPNs Work with SmartphonesLuckily, these days, a lot of smartphones are already created to incorporate virtual private networks. You must make sure that it's compatible with the network you want to connect to. If this isn't the case, you can often subscribe to a third-party virtual private network for a monthly charge. Sometimes, certain VPN subscriptions will be recommended—or only certain ones will be available—for specific phone models, like Samsung. Find out which one works for your mobile device. With any of these scenarios, once the VPN is enabled, you can search the internet and check your mail with security. 4. Why the IP Addresses Matter So MuchBy this point, you can see how IP addresses play such a huge factor, since as you move around with your mobile device, the address may very well change. While you may only have one logical IP address, VPNs can use numerous physical IP addresses, depending on where you are. Plus, VPNs will continue to give you a protective shield not only while you roam locations, but also across different kinds of internet connections. So, for example, you can use your phone's 3G (which wirelessinternet.org explains is only becoming more in-demand) and then switch to WiFi, or even a cabled Ethernet connection—all under the protection of your virtual private network. Not only can you log online through your phone relatively invisible, but you can seamlessly switch from one device and connection to another. Virtual private networks are still heavily in development; but more and more, mobile devices are coming already equipped with these safety shields. And while you might currently have to purchase something separately to protect your own personal mobile device, more universal solutions are currently being sought so that no matter what kind of technology you're using, a common VPN will be readily available to you. Websites For People Who Have Already Made It Posted: 03 Dec 2012 05:00 AM PST When you look at all the people who work online and have websites, generally they will fall into only a few demographics. They tend to be young people, mostly male, who aren't overly happy in their jobs and are trying to get out, or younger still who are trying to ‘make it’ online before they have to ever go into the world of work. These are the people who see working online as a chance to make their dreams happen – to make some money, maybe to get some fame and hopefully impress some girls/guys along the way too. The good news is that if you know what you're doing then this really is a way to achieve those things and there are plenty of examples of people who have – I'm not saying that you should stop chasing the dream if that describes you, rather what I'm doing is calling other people to join in. Specifically I'm talking about the people who have already ‘made it’ – the celebrities, the wealthy business men and women and the people who were just fortunate enough to have been born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Why? Because those groups are perfectly poised to literally take over the web and to make it big time and if they aren't acting on that ability then they're currently squandering a position that most of us other webmasters would give our left leg to be in. Allow me to explain…
Websites for Famous PeopleWebsites are all about exposure and audiences, they're all about how many people you can reach and how many eyeballs you can get for your product or for your affiliates'/advertisers' products. This is why I don't understand how so many famous people can just ignore the web as a money making venture. You've got a Twitter account with a billion followers? Then if you made a website and put some AdSense on it you could make a fortune in no time at all. Websites for Rich PeopleAnd okay so let's say that you don't have quite the pull of Justin Bieber – that doesn't mean you can't benefit from simply the time and resources that being wealthy will afford you. If you are wealthy enough to not work for two weeks… well imagine how much content you could create and how many links you could buy in that time. Again, in almost no time at all you could be looking at a website that would be more powerful than others that have been around for a long time and as the profits increased, soon it would be paying for itself. What's All This Mean for You?Okay, so this was merely intended to be something of a thought provoking article – if you're not rich then you're not suddenly going to become rich and famous overnight so it's not much use to you. However you can benefit from this little thought experiment in some other ways. First of all, make sure to keep in the back of your mind just how useful any kind of exposure is, and in other words: make sure that you're quick to capitalize on it if you do get it. When a band goes on XFactor and doesn't get through – if they just used the time on television to promote a website (or even just had a catchy name with an easily searchable site) they could still get a lot more success from the experience. Being interviewed for something? In your local paper? Then push your website hard. Likewise you can always consider getting help from people who do have more time, resources or power. Approach someone to invest in some links and make a deal with them that they can't refuse and you could suddenly gain a lot of exposure. Write something that might be of interest to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tweet it to him and a re-tweet could earn you thousands of hits in minutes. And then when it all works out you will be rich and you will have the exposure… at which point it becomes a virtuous cycle ending with global domination… The post Websites For People Who Have Already Made It appeared first on Technically Easy.
