Surfing The Internet In 1726

As an Internet Marketer my business relies on my use and
understanding of words.

Using one in the wrong context could cost me thousands
of dollars in lost sales.

Perhaps that's being a little over dramatic but words
are vital to successful marketing.

But, have you ever wondered where the words we use in
our business and personal lives every day come from?

Here are some interesting ones:

Yahoo - The name of the formerly popular search engine
was invented by Gulliver's Travels author Jonathan Swift
in 1726 to describe filthy, greedy human-like creatures
who are also "deformed" and "hairy". No wonder Internet
users switched to Google!

Cyberspace - The phrase was first used by sci-fi writer
William Gibson in his 1982 shorty story Burning Chrome.
The idea was expanded on two years later in novel
Neuromancer where he describes cyberspace as "a graphic
representation of data abstracted from the banks of
every computer in the human system".

Nerd - These day's it's cool to be a nerd but when it
was invented by Dr Seuss in his 1950 children's book If
I Ran The Zoo
the word described a make-believe animal.

Bump - Every time you pay to "bump" your WSO to the top
of the forum, you are paying homage to William
Shakespeare! It was first used in Romeo And Juliet,
describing Juliet's nurse hitting her head and giving
her "a bump as big as a cockerel's stone".

Gargantuan - How to describe the profits you'll make as
an Inbox Rockstar member was originally used to depict a
very hungry giant called Gargantua in a series of novels
written by French monk Francois Rabelais in the 1530s.

I'll keep today's offer simple and in words you will
easily understand:
