An Easy Marketing Tip from a Rabbi and a Banana

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 03:00 PM PST

What do rabbis and bananas have to do with marketing?

Meet Rabbi Issamar Ginzberg.  You’ve probably noticed right off that he’s an unusual guy.  First of all, he’s a Hasidic rabbi, complete with old-fashioned clothing, a big hat, and long payos (the sidecurls).  But that’s not all that’s different.

You see, most Hasidic (very, very Orthodox Jews) shun the Internet and most features of modern life. They tend to be very insular.  They don’t use social media, they don’t interact much with the secular world and they wouldn’t hire anyone outside their immediate circles.

Not Rabbi Ginzberg.

He is, to coin a phrase, a purple cow.

He’s a marketing maven (expert) and a big fan of LinkedIn and social media.  He’s been featured in USA Today, Inc., The Business Insider, and many other mainstream publications, as well as Mispacha (Family) magazine.

His favorite editor and press release writer isn’t an observant Jew, or even Jewish at all – she’s a Baptist.

He started his first company at age seven. Quoting from his Marketing Strategy – Kosher blog:

…First I sold pieces of candy at school. I would buy a box of candy then sell each piece separately. When I wasn't selling candy, and doing my homework, I was drawn like a magnet to computers.

He recently spoke at Google headquarters in Israel, and shared some tips from his speech on his blog.  I love his idea about bringing your own guests (say, a client or two), to hear you speak.

It adds to your credibility, gets them to kvell about you [praise you to other people], and gives them additional reasons to hire you.

My favorite tip is the one about the banana and the gas station.  This is how it works.  When you’re stuck, and can’t think of what to write, just come up with a word (or two) that are totally unrelated to your subject (like a banana, or a gas station, when you’re writing about search engine optimization). Your brain will automatically go on autopilot and start trying to link these seemingly unrelated concepts with a third word, or bridge words.

Don’t believe me?  I just tried it, and it works.  Here’s an example (which took me about three minutes to write):

What do bananas and search engine optimization have in common? The first one feeds your stomach and is a tasty snack.  The second feeds your brain, and helps searchers find useful information to answer their questions, whether it’s news about Syria, how to start a blog, or even the best way to peel a banana.   (hint, watch a monkey do it.)

Oh, and he’s also really good at answering oddball questions about kosher rules, and why the prohibition against cooking a calf in its mother’s milk doesn’t apply to dipping chicken in egg.
