Last week I was chatting to a lovely couple at a local restaurant that I regularly visit that has amazing views of the beach and is situated in the tourism zone in Albufieria.
From first impressions I thought they were in their mid to late fifties and was pretty shocked when the husband announced they are both in their seventies. Along with his wife they had spent the last ten years living in Portugal and spent a lot of their time travelling around in their motor home.
I said that it was one of my plans to spend more time motor homing because I enjoyed it so much. He told me that instead of putting it off I should do it now and not let life pass me by.
Even though it was a Wednesday afternoon and most people were at work I thought I was doing alright to be lazing about whilst my son was at school, but what he said did get to me rather a lot.
You see it isn't just about the money, it's about doing something and not actually just planning it.
This is how our move to Portugal came about. I have always planned everything. I am a typical woman that has a list for absolutely everything in a way it is like a disorder. Then whilst we were having some adult time we went to the cinema and saw a film "what happened in Vegas" and it struck a real cord with us. The main character in it played by Cameron Diaz stops planning everything and suddenly really starts enjoying her life. This really got to us as we had been considering moving abroad for quite a while and we needed a push like that to get us motivated.
Best of all within eight weeks of seeing the film we had moved into a villa in Portugal and we have no regrets at all!
With the use of technology today I can now type this for you from beside the pool on my Laptop. If I wasn't in the internet marketing business I wouldn't have been able to do it so easily. The fear of no wages or what I would do when I moved would have ruined it for me before I had even started packing.
I am not writing this to get you all to quit your jobs, join the internet marketing business full time or take a world cruise. It is very easy to give advice but it is ten times harder to actually accept it. But maybe it is about time that we all sat down and decided what we really want out of life.
I know many people that earn very little but don't actually have any debts either. They rarely work but don't claim any kind of benefits, like us they are Motor home owners and sold their home, and with the profit took early retirement, bought a really nice RV and enjoy the good life.
They now make a living by stopping at Caravan sites and doing the odd jobs for the locals. They also enjoy their moderate pension.
It is a lifestyle that may not suit everyone as many don't want to live in a motor home even if it is 34 foot long but I never met another couple that have seemed so happy and relaxed.
I believe the answer is to follow our dreams - that is their dream and they are living it right now!
A friend of mine called Mary wanted to work from home and follow the dream, she therefore started her own online business. Her ultimate drive was to earn more money than she did before and be able to take a day off when she wanted to without it affecting her income and not having to worry about her debts. Like most people she was in a poorly paid job and wanted a solution to her problems.
Instead of being in one badly paid job she took on three part time jobs and even though she roughly earned the same she now had her money coming from three different sources. With the spare time she had, she created her own online business.
Her idea was to start small and gradually earn enough money to drop one of her jobs and just have the two part time jobs. Within a year she was in a position to drop one, and five months after that she was free from the everyday life of working for an employer.
After learning how she did this I am now going to reassess my own goals and see where I can take them. Eve though I have a great online business I always want more, and it is about time I seriously slowed down before I get bags under my eyes.
