Hi,
Samantha Here,
Most people are temporary experts, but very few make any money out of it.
At home I have two laptops. I don't trust myself to transfer data from the oldest of the two, which is a laptop I purchased about three years ago so I just keep adding laptops to the system.
It's not a good system though - it means that as technology increases I'll have to buy more and more laptops (I don't go near desktops now - big ugly things that take up far too much room) because they all contain information necessary to my business.
So at some point I'll end up with my office full of laptops. I'm just hoping that some kind of technology comes along that will solve the problem.
Or I could just make better use of backups I suppose.
I'm wandering off-topic here. Back to the point.
The last time I bought a laptop was a couple of months ago. Before
that it was about three years which is quite a long time in terms of technology moving on.
'Better do some research' I thought, so I found myself in the queue for a checkout with three PC magazines feeling like a nerd.
I spent a couple of weeks researching the current state of memory size, processing power, connections etc, and decided what I needed my new laptop for before making a choice which one to buy.
In short I became a temporary expert on the current state of laptop technology and could quote the specs of countless models, and the applications they we best used for.
Now as you know knowledge is power, but it's also PROFIT. If you know something, no matter how small, trivial or unimportant it seems, there is always someone out there who'll pay for your knowledge.
Computers are a bad example of this, as is anything electrical, because technology moves on so fast that your knowledge is outdated before it can really be used.
I could have put out a free report (just before Christmas would be the perfect time of course) outlining my views on the best laptops for the best job but I didn't.
Other subjects though can be far more lucrative.
My next major purchase is going to be a Motorhome. The American type that I can travel around Europe in.
I love travelling but it can be hard enough to handle a decent sized Motorhome in certain conditions anyway, let alone trying to do it with a non-travelled husband and a seven year old boy, so it will be an interesting challenge as a family.
I'm starting my research now, and I'm already discovering how much there is to learn about a subject that I thought would be very similar to caravaning. Let me give you some examples. Please be patient if this is a subject that bores you. The point IS coming.
There is no real guidance about what differentiates what a caravaner or a motorhomer needs to know about. Whether you are taking it over to Morocco or just having a quick trip to France.
Which means there is a big market for both, as many will start with one and build up to another. You have to make the decision yourself based on factors such as engine size, shape and equipment. Get it wrong and you could find yourself heading across the channel in something powered by a lawnmower engine, in which case you're more likely to end up having to call out the AA in the middle of Brittany.
Extreme and silly examples I know, but the knowledge required is significant. Although I love reading about this subject and meeting local motorhomers as its my favourite hobby, the Internet Marketer part of my brain insists I should be paid for it, so here's how I'll do it.
Once I have enough knowledge to feel secure in my own purchase, I'm also sure I'll be a temporary expert on the subject.
Remember this is a purchase with potential life or death consequences so I really will have to know my stuff.
I say 'temporary expert' because as with computers, technology moves on and my knowledge will become outdated, although not as fast. So I'll put together a free report about what I've learned - might be something like
'Twenty things most people get wrong when buying a new motorhome'
or
'The best ways to lose a lot of money when buying your first motorhome -
and how to avoid them'
And I'll give this report away for free!
But how does it make money?
Well you've probably guessed but if you haven't then I'm doing two
key things with this report:
1. Collecting the email addresses of everyone who downloads it so I have a list of 'motorhome' people for my next product, which will be a paid product.
2. Putting an affiliate link in the book for another author's book which will pay me 50, 60 or 70% every time I make a sale referred from my free report.
There's a bit more too it than that, from sneaky ways to distribute free e-books to cloaking affiliate links (although with any subject NOT to do with making money you don't need to), but we can go into that at a later date.
This method of marketing works for most if not all niches.
So recognise yourself as a 'temporary expert'. Think about all the times family members ask for your opinion, whether it's about computers, buying a new car or how to connect the DVD player. You are a temporary expert, and that means you can make money from your knowledge.
If you don't have the time or (let's be honest) can't bothered becoming a temporary expert, then you should check out this offer:
