Traffic Stats: April 2012

Posted: 03 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Last month saw traffic finally stabilize on Technically Easy after a few months of a minor decline. I was hoping to see that trend continue, and possible a little up swing as well in April, but I knew it would be a little difficult to continue the trend that I saw at the end of last year. Overall, thought, April was a good month with regards to traffic.

Steady Traffic

April say traffic continue to be steady, which is a trend that started in March. While it is nice not seeing traffic decrease, it would have been nice to see a nice slight increase. But I’ll take a steady traffic level over a decrease any day.

As you can see in the graph above, the traffic showed a slight increase over April 2011, which is always good to see. In terms of how much of an increase, the table below shows the numbers for both visits and pageviews comparing April 2012 to April 2011.

Metric April 2011 April 2012 Change
Visits 67,880 84,383 24.31%
Pageviews 94,489 116,196 22.97%

Much like March, the year-over-year visits and pageviews increases were around 20-25%, which is a healthy increase for the monthly increase. In terms of comparing April to March, there was a slight increase in pageviews, but a minor decrease in visits. Of course, April also had on less day for reporting than March, so in reality the pageviews were higher and the visits between the two months were about the same.

Traffic Sources

In terms of traffic sources, search engines are still the largest source of traffic to Technically Easy. Unfortunately, this has also had a dramatic effect on traffic over the past few months as much of my older posts that discuss older technology are being searched less and less. Even though my rankings haven’t changed much, the decrease in searches has decreased my traffic.

As I have been saying for many months, I am still hoping to increase my referral and direct traffic numbers, but so far it has been a struggle in doing so. I don’t like having almost 90% of my traffic coming from search engines, as one algorithm change can have a dramatic effect on the traffic numbers

While I am happy with the traffic numbers for April 2012, I am hoping that I can start to increase the visits going forward. I will also continue to look at increasing both my referral and direct traffic numbers. With Google constantly changing their algorithm, it may impact my visitor numbers in the future.

Bring the Power of Image to Your Personal Communications

Have followers you value so much and wish you can thank them in a way they will feel and appreciate? Guess what, it is now possible. Instagram comes with an application called the Statigram. When you want to load this service, it will request a username and password; just use your Instagram details here. Then navigate and snapshot the right person for a vote of thanks.

Put a Mark of Personality to Your Photos

There are many photo-editing services you can use to create cool effects with your photos. For your iPhone, you can use Outcolor, Photogene, ArtCamera and many others. These iPhone camera apps will allow you to exactly have your photo with the right graphics and customizations. Have photos of your pets or any other family picture on other photo sharing services like Snapily, Mixbook, Smilebox and others? Why not get them over for some catchy fun on Instagram?

Just download them to the iPhone and the app will take care of the rest.

Identify Your Top Brands and Follow Them

It will surprise you to learn that some top organizations and brands are already rocking it with instagram; speaking of World Health Organization, NBC News, CNN, Starbucks, and even celebs and artists. You can find any brand or group of your choice by searching for their usernames on the app.

Hashtag your Uploads

While hashtag may seem so popular with twitter, it is now making its way into other photo sharing networks as a way of discovering even more shared photos. A lot of people use it to find more fun images while for others it is a way of finding new people or groups to follow. Hashtaging uploads before sharing can enhance their discoverability across any network including facebook, twitter and of course instagram.

Grow Your Instagram Followers

With most photos, people need less explanation to understand it which is why they help to break the language barrier restricting international friendliness. With Instagram, you can follow as a many people as you like despite their background and they have a choice to either follow you back or not. I have gained many friends on Instagram by making serial uploads every Monday morning. My serial uploads are centered on golf sports which is my favorite game.

Hey, the opportunity is limitless. Instagram is growing on daily basis and the good news is, you don't need a laptop or desktop computer loaded with applications to use it. For most of us, our iPhone is already our second home and Instagram provides us even more photo sharing features without lifting a finger off this device.
