Book Promotion Goes High Tech - Promoting With Flash Drives

Several years ago I was writing a travel story about Galveston and the visitor's bureau gave me a media kit on a flash drive imprinted with the Galveston logo. It was handy to have all of the tourist information and facts about Galveston in one spot for reference, and being handed a flash drive was much more effective than a brochure with a website address.

I thought of that experience when I was offered some free samples (pictured at left) of customized flash drives from USB Memory Direct, and it got me to thinking about how authors and publishers could use these mini storage devices to promote books.

You can order flash drives with varying amounts of memory, but most of them hold an enormous amount of data. That makes them ideal for storing large files and sharing multi-media content. Here are just a few ideas for book promotion materials that can be distributed through flash drives:

  • Review copies of books and ebooks
  • Book excerpts in written or audio format
  • Prequels to forthcoming books
  • Complete media kit
  • Cover art and author photos
  • Personalized audio or video greeting from the author
  • Audio or video clips of media interviews or presentations
  • Video book trailers
  • Educational videos

These high tech book promotions can be sent to the most important reviewers, bloggers, journalists and influencers who reach your target audience. Sure, you can offer all of these things as downloads from your author website, but for your most important contacts a package in the mail has more impact than an email and it's more likely to get noticed and remembered.

You could even give a few flash drives away to your biggest fans, or conduct a contest for readers to win a flash drive loaded with bonus content or free ebooks. Or how about selling a multi-media training program on a flash drive?

Flash drives can be ordered in a variety of shapes, colors and materials from USB Memory Direct and other vendors. They even come disguised as pens and wristbands and can be made in custom shapes such as a book. Prices vary quite a bit, depending on the storage capacity and quantity ordered. To give you a general idea of prices, expect to pay around $200 for 25 custom imprinted flash drives with 1GB storage, which works out to about $8 each.

If you need just a few, you can buy plain flash drives without custom imprinting. Of course you can do the same thing with DVDs at a lower cost, but they have a smaller capacity and lack the cool factor and portability of flash drives.

How about you – what creative uses can you think of for using custom flash drives and other digital media for book promotion?
