Redpepper's Facedeals Combines Facebook Check-Ins, Facial Recognition, Cameras
What do you get when you combine check-ins, facial-recognition technology, and small cameras? If you're advertising and marketing agency Redpepper, you get Facedeals. The concept behind Facedeals is simple: Local businesses install cameras with facial-recognition technology, which automatically check in Facebook users who are detected, and subsequently notify them of available deals at the businesses based on their like histories. Users must authorize the Facedeals application in order to take part, and the... read more>>
FTC: Privacy Settlement With Facebook Finalized
The privacy settlement between Facebook and the Federal Trade Commission, announced in late November of last year, is now finalized, as the period of public comment has expired. The Wall Street Journal reported the FTC announcement that the settlement was finalized, nothing that Facebook escaped financial penalties, unlike Google, which agreed to pay $22.5 million earlier this week to settle the agency's charge that it bypassed the privacy settings of millions of... read more>>

Outside The Glassdoor: Facebook Left Off 'Top 25 Companies for Work-Life Balance' List
Maybe the relationship between Facebook and online jobs and career community Glassdoor isn't as cozy as it seems: The social network was left off Glassdoor's list of the "Top 25 Companies for Work-Life Balance" list, after finishing third on its earlier list of the 50 best places to work. Facebook was No. 7 on the 2011 version of the "Top 25 Companies for Work-Life Balance" list, which Glassdoor compiles from information in... read more>>
POLL: Which Facebook Timeline Likes Box Do You Like?
Facebook appears to be testing different layouts on its timeline for profiles for a box displaying recent likes by users. One version of the likes box, which appears on users' timelines, displays recent likes, and appears to have room for up to four. Another version, which appears in users' news feeds, says users like a certain number of things (two in the case below), and the two items of content occupy the entire... read more>>
Facebook Aims For Greater Water Efficiency At Data Center
About one week after releasing energy usage figures, Facebook showed how efficiently water is used at its data center in Prineville, Ore. The verdict? Good, not great. One year after Facebook started tracking water usage in Prineville (based on WUE, or water usage efficiency), the meter reads 0.22 L/kWh (liters per kilowatt-hour). That might seem low, but as tech blog GigaOM notes, the ideal figure is zero. Facebook's Daniel Lee outlined on the... read more>>
Turn Your Facebook Photo Into A Postcard ... And Send It
Many Facebook users didn't like when it seemed as if the social network was trying to take over their email. But we're guessing people might be a little more happier that Facebook is making progress in the snail mail market. Users can create a physical postcard with a Facebook photo and send it to a friend. According to TechCrunch, the social network is trying this out on a few select members... read more>>
Automotive Synergy: BBC's 'Top Gear' Integrated Into Facebook Game Car Town
A leading BBC television show and automotive brand, and a leading automotive Facebook game -- a natural combination? BBC Worldwide and Cie Games thought so, which is why "Top Gear" will be integrated into Car Town. Car Town players currently have access to a branded "Top Gear" location within the game's GPS menu, where they can access the "Top Gear" hangar and a collection of cars that have appeared on the TV... read more>>

UPDATED: Australians Angered At Facebook Page Making Fun Of Aborigines
Memes - photos with funny (and sometimes offensive) captions - often spread through Facebook like wildfire. But Australians aren't laughing at the Facebook page of Aboriginal Memes, which the social network recently shut down amidst claims of racism. However, a copycat page has already opened and is gaining popularity. The page depicted Aborigines (native Australians) as drunks and welfare cheats. A Facebook spokesperson reached out to AllFacebook, offering this explanation of the... read more>>
UPDATED: Mark Zuckerberg's Freshman Roommate (Facebook Member No. 14) Falls Short At Olympics
If it wasn't bad enough that Facebook Co-Founder Eduardo Saverin renounced his U.S. citizenship, fellow co-founder and current CEO Mark Zuckerberg was likely rooting for an athlete from Haiti during the men's triple jump final at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games Thursday, but Samyr Laine, his freshman roommate at Harvard University, finished 11th out of 12 competitors with a distance of 16.65 meters, well behind the gold medal winner, Christian... read more>>
