Nike+ Running Comes To Android

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 12:50 PM PDT

A lot of Applications that we have associated with iOS over the years have seemingly made the trasition cross platform over to Android. We saw Flipboard, Temple run and various other big Apps launch on Android recently clearly showing that Android is just as attractive now as iOS. One such app that has successfully made the transition is Nike+ Running. For all those who are unfamiliar with the application on iOS, it is one of the most downloaded apps from the Apple App Store, it is an application that helps you calculate all your running and subsequently set all your goals for running and calories for burning etc.

The UI for the Android Application is pretty much identical to the application on iOS. It is still extremely easy to calibrate and use and it barely took us a minute to get everything set and run. There were a couple of issues with Forced close and on one occasion out of three that we tested the application, it showed different results as compared to its compatriot on the iPhone. We are not entirely sure if it was the phone or the application that caused the error. Apart from that one instance, the applications performed well together.

The application also has various challenges that you can take on and compare with your friends results. to help you do that the application also has a good social network connection, it is connected to nikeplus.com where you can then analyse your runs or even compare it with your friends stats. Obviously there is also ability to share your runs and info over Twitter and Facebook. The application is available for free, which is the best thing obviously.

All in all we believe its a great application that runners and joggers would definitely enjoy. Did you use the application? What was your experience? Do let us know.

As the name suggests, the device would be an upgrade to both One X and One XL. According to the reports, the device is not expected to be physically much different from its siblings but there are expected to be big upgrades in the phone internals. The phone would weigh roughly the same and sport the similar sized 4.7 Inch  Super LCD2 display.

Now Facebook Allows You To Edit Your Comments As Many Times As You Want

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 08:16 AM PDT

Facebook has revolutionized the way we communicate with our friends. We now sit and chit chat with friends who we havent even met for ages, and in some cases never. There are various was we can talk over facebook, one being through a mis-functioning chat and the other being through Direct Messages in the inbox. However, one method we use most often is commenting either on status updates or images. However, we are all humans and we make mistakes while we type. In a way faster you type more the chances you may miss a word or two or forget a space. However, if you are commenting on something official, even a small typo can be extremely costly, and to avoid that you have to delete the entire message and retype it.

This is not only time consuming but also keeps you a step behind while discussing something. However, now Facebook has bought a change that would really help everyone. Now we can all edit our comments as many times as we want. This is extremely helpful as there is no restriction in the number of edits we can make. We can even delete the comment altogether how we could initially but this add on is definitely a welcome add-on.

This definitely does not bring positives to the table, but also a major negative point as people can quickly edit the comment which could make the entire discussion look extremely stupid. In a way it takes away the credibility as someone at anytime can change the comments and flip from their stance. However, all in all we are sure the addition would very much be welcome by the audience.

What are your comments on this change? Do let us know.

Flipboard Now Available For Everybody On Android Play Store

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 07:15 AM PDT

Flipboard is probably the most famous online reading application for handheld devices. We saw the application achieve great success when it was on just the iPhone and iPad. However, the Flipboard team decided to spread their wings a little more and it was launched as a Galaxy SIII exclusive app on Android. However, they had promised to deliver the social feed reader into a magazine format soon for everyone on Android, and it seems that the day is finally here.

Flipboard even though through XDA was available for everyone for sometime, but that had no support from the developers. Now the application can be downloaded right off the play store here. It is available for free and supports all the features that the application had on iOS. Also, if you already had a Flipboard account over on iOS you can log in with the same username and your feeds will be synced to your Android device. This we feel is definitely fantastic because if we had to configure entire feeds again then it would have taken a lot of time.

For all those who have never used Flipboard, it is a social networking reader that connects all your feeds from Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader and various sites and display them in a very unique magazine like feature. With the launch of Flipboard on Android, one thing is pretty much confirmed that there would be not much enhancements coming to the Google Currents, which we felt had a lot of potential when it was launched for Android.

What are your views on Flipboard? Would you be downloading it for Android? Do let us know in the comments section below.

Enhance The Mail Experience Using Rich Text For Mail For iPhone/iPad

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

We are always on the hunt for some wild and awesome Cydia tweaks popping up every now and then.

Rich Text for Mail is an awesome new tweak available in the Cydia that lets you use rich text formatting (RTF) when composing emails on your iPhone. Ryan Petrich is the man behind Rich Text for Mail, this tweak blends in beautifully with one of our favourite iOS tweak: the father of Cydia Tweaks - Action Menu.

Rich Text for Mail will allows one to format which includes font size, font type, bold, underline, italicize, strikethrough, double strikethrough. Basically all the formatting available in MS Office is made available through this tweak. It also has the feature to insert images directly into the mail using the stock Mail app.

This tweak is highly recommended to all iPhone/iPad users who have jailbroken their device. This tweak adds a very important feature which is not available in the default mail.app. Rich Text for Mail is available now for $4.99 in the Cydia Store but as always it is available for free in the other repo's. No new icons will be added to your SpringBoard and settings can be configured in your main Settings.app.

To install Rich Text For Mail you need to follow the steps given below:

  1. Open Cydia on your jailbroken iphone.
  2. Once the data is loaded, go to search and type in "Rich Text For Mail".
  3. It's free in the ‘IHR (iHacks Repo)’, ‘insanelyi repo’ and ‘sinfuliphone repo’.
  4. Select it and install it.
  5. Respring or reboot your device.
  6. You are done to use it.

Watch Fruit Ninja Being Played With A Real Knife

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 06:50 AM PDT

Fruit Ninja is without a doubt one game that we all have played on either our iPhones, iPads or Android devices. Yet, if you are not satisfied by just virtually cutting the plethora of fruits using your fingers then why not try out a real knife to satisfy your fruit cutting needs? Someone tried to do that on their Samsung Galaxy SIII and if you do not believe our words, here is the video for fun’s sake:

However, we strongly recommend you not to try any of such things on your extremely expensive Galaxy SIII. However, if you have a bag full of cash and more than one Galaxy SIII lying around, then go ahead and try this and let us know about what exactly happened. It is pretty unclear how exactly the knife has worked, since the screen is capacitive and a metal would not work over it. Maybe its a capacitive knife or something like that.

Also, it may open a new range of opportunities for various game development teams to ship out accessories like say the magic knife for Fruit Ninja. What are your views on such a move? Do let us know in the comments section below.

AppCent Allows You to See The Download Progress Of Your App On iOS

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 06:22 AM PDT

iPhone was the original device that actually bought the applications to a handheld device, no wonder phones became smart phones. Since their launch we are always on the lookout for the latest apps, be it a feature app or a utility or even a game, we just are not prepared to be left behind. talking about myself, i spend at least an hour daily surfing around the App Store. However, every so often it happens that we have to download a rather big application. For example it could be one of the latest asphalt racing games or even something like FIFA which at times are in GB’s and not MB’s. During such instances it becomes criminally boring to watch the app slider just go on and on. It is like one of those PC games installations where you would want to know the exact progress of your application downloaded. This would also enable you to know exactly how much of data you have already consumed just in case you are downloading on 3G and enable you to pause the download in case you feel that the bandwidth might be getting consumed. We have the perfect solution for this problem, if you are on a jailbroken iDevice though.

AppCent is an extremely useful jailbreak tweak that lets you monitor the application download in terms of percentages. This way you do not have to sit and glare at the screen always and can carry on doing your other tasks while the application downloads. What this amazing tweak by rud0lf77 does is that it adds a small percentage at the bottom of your application when it is being downloaded giving users the important information. To install this useful tweak all you have to do is go to cydia on your jailbroken device and search for appcent. It is available in modmyi repo for thise who wish to know.

Once the downloading is done, promptly retsart and your springboard and you will see the magic happen as you download a new application. You can also disable this feature if you wish to by going into settings menu and there clicking on disable under appcent though why you would do that is something only you can answer.

How did you find this tweak? Do let us know in the section below.

Blackberry 10 First Handset Will NOT Feature A Physical Keyboard

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 05:52 AM PDT

If there is one thing that we truly love on Blackberry’s is their physical QWERTY keyboard. If I am being perfectly honest, i probably enjoy typing on my Blackberry Bold III much more than on my iPhone 4, or for that matter any touch screen device. the keys are so perfectly made and typing is pure fun and electric fast. However, in the race to survive and still compete it does seem that Blackbery has decided to let go of their biggest USP as they move towards a new Operating System called The blackberry OS 10.

However if the reports in the popular news agency AP are to be believed then the first Blackberry OS 10 device will be a touch slab and not sport a keyboard. In the past Blackberry has gone this route and have failed. I cannot help but think how poor some of the Blackberry Storms were or even the odd Curve that did not feature the keyboard. The markets truly showed that Blackberry just is not competent enough infront of the likes of iPhone and Android smartphones to be taking them on at their own game. It does not take a genius to figure out that in the recent times the most popular Blackberry has been the 9900 Bold which featured both the physical keyboard as well as a very capable touchscreen.

We have seen plenty of screenshots of the new Blackberry OS 10 and seemingly it is very UI based, so we may even see people like a slab only kind of Blackberry. However, if history is any measuring milestone then Blackberry is not doing the smartest thing on the planet. There have been reports that the first smart phone would be extremely similar to the developers device that was shown off, but with minor tweaks. I was definitely impressed with the hardware and how little things that were shown off worked. But would it be good enough to make RIM a major player in the market again? Only time can answer that.

Google Drive Vs Dropbox Vs SkyDrive: The Fight For Cloud Storage Supremacy

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 03:55 AM PDT

Cloud Computing is gaining tremendous popularity these days. Firstly, Dropbox Inc. came up a new cloud storage service Dropbox. Then Microsoft launched SkyDrive in its newest Windows Operating system Windows 8 and now recently Google has started a new Cloud Storage Service Google Drive. There is also a stiff competitor, Apple with its iCloud but we won't be getting into that comparison because it's a completely different concept for apple. All of these cloud services have their own pros and cons.  So here we will summarize the comparison between these cloud storage services.

I have broken down the comparison into comparing 2 cloud drives at a time to make it easier.

Comparison between Google Drive and Dropbox

Email Access

Google Drive stuff can be easily accessed from the Gmail i.e. users can send the link of the Google Drive content to others in Gmail, instead of attaching files in Gmail.

In Dropbox, there is no direct way to access files through any of the E-mail services. Users have to upload their files to send others.

Price

Google Drive is cheaper than Dropbox. It provides free 5GB storage space on the cloud to each user. Users can also upgrade their cloud to 25GB and 100GB at the cost of $2.49/month and $4.99/month.

Dropbox claims to give 18GB free storage space but for the new user it gives 2GB free space and user can get additional 16GB free space by referring others, 500MB on each referral. To upgrade your storage space, you will be charged $9.99/month for 50GB space and $19.99 for 100GB space.

Platform

Dropbox running successfully on all the platforms like Windows, Linux, Mac, Smart phones and iOS.

Google Drive also runs on all the platforms except iOS. Soon, it will be available on it.

User Availability

Dropbox has started very earlier and more than 45 million people are use using it. So, there is no reason for such users to migrate from Dropbox to other cloud service.

Google Drive has recently launched and it not is open for all the users. Users firstly have to notify Google and then Google sends Email to the user when it becomes available for him.

Looks (User Interface)

Dropbox is not much intuitive but people are widely using it.

Google Drive looks something like Google Docs which many of you must have tried to and it also uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to read scanned PDF, Images and other files. It reads the text from the images and filters your result according to it i.e. if you are searching for Mount Everest then it will also show Mount Everest images in your search result.

Security

In Dropbox, there is no internal security of your data i.e. the data shared in Dropbox is visible to everyone who is using Dropbox. Users cannot share their files and folders to specific people and there is no such feature to set password on files to restrict from unauthorized access. It uses SSL AES-256 bit encryption algorithm to share data.

Google Drive allows users to share files and folders publically or with specific people and it also gives liberty to its end users to share password protected files. There is no such encryption algorithm for sharing of your data.

Comparison between Google Drive and SkyDrive

Supported Platform

Google Drive runs on all the platforms like Windows, Linux, Mac, Android etc except iOS. Soon, it will be available on it also.

SkyDrive is available on all platforms supported by Google Drive except Android OS. It additionally runs on iOS and Windows Phones.

Storage Space and Plans

Google Drive provides free 5GB of storage space on the cloud to each user. Users can also upgrade their cloud to 25GB and 100GB at the cost of $2.49/month and $4.99/month.

SkyDrive is cheaper than Google Drive. It provides 7GB free storage space to each individual user and also allows expanding their storage space up to 20GB for $10 per year and 50GB for $25 per year.

Supported File Formats

Google Drive supports all daily use format files and folders. It also supports Photoshop Mock-ups and AutoCAD Drawings. User can view all these files without installing the supported software on their PC. Google Drive uses it's on Built-in file viewer to view all kind of files.

SkyDrive doesn't include any additional format files like Photoshop etc. It also uses web apps built-in file viewers to open documents files.

File Recovery

When a file is deleted accidently or Intentionally in Google Drive it goes to Trash folder which means an accidently deleted file can be recovered back easily.

SkyDrive doesn't provide any Trash Folder i.e. file once deleted will not be recovered back.

Security

Users can also apply for two step verification on their Google Drive to protect it from any unauthorized access. Google Drive also maintains detailed log of every change made to any file or account.

There is no extra layer to protect SkyDrive account and it doesn't maintain any log for any change.

File Search

Google Drive has made searching in files and folder very easy. It uses OCR (Optical Character Reorganization) technology to read scanned PDF, Images and other files. It reads the text from the images and filters your result according to it i.e. if you are searching for Mount Everest then it will also show Mount Everest images in your search result.

SkyDrive searches the contents as searches made in MS-Office.

Offline Access

In Google Drive, users can access all the stored files in offline mode using the mobile apps. You can download and save documents or files on your mobile for later use.

There is no such facility available in SkyDrive for iOS Devices but iOS device user can export documents to another app like iBooks or Good Reader to access them in offline mode.

SkyDrive doesn't provide any Trash Folder i.e. file once deleted will not be recovered back. Users can also restore the earlier modified files but the exact duration isn't specified yet.

Log Information

Dropbox maintains the detailed log information for any change made on any file.

No log information is maintained in SkyDrive.

Android 4.1 Is Jelly Bean: CONFIRMED

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 03:21 AM PDT

Amidst all the rumors around, there has been an expected disclosure that the next version of Android is going to be Jelly Bean. And it will carry the version number as 4.1 not 5.0. Though the disclosure is unintentional and is reportedly seen on the US Play Store when purchasing a Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ smartphone described as “soon the first phone with Android 4.1 Jell…”

From this piece of text it is rather obvious what the next version's name and version would be.

Moreover, there’s also an image showing a few of the visual changes present in Jelly Bean. That’s a new wallpaper and a visually refreshed Google search bar on the homescreen, but the dock looks almost the same. The picture is of low resolution, but still the changes are somewhat visible.

It is the features what we are looking forward to not the visuals. There hasn't been any leak about the features though, we fully expect it to pack a punch like the current version.

This further confirms that Jelly Bean will be a minor update to Ice Cream Sandwich and we should expect "Key Lime Pie" to be Android 5.0 and probably launch with a new Nexus smartphone in the winter!

Despite of Ice Cream Sandwich's success it has failed to reach the masses. Even after 3 months of its release less than 1% of the total android devices are running Google's latest Android version. Despite of being open source and fully capable of running on low-end devices; as suggested by custom builds like cm9; it is being served with only high-end devices.

It has been a major drawback because of which developers are rather confused and do not prefer developing for individual devices. This lack of a universal platform has led Apple's ios enjoy a better stand with updates throughout the series at one go.

It is rather a pity that Google has not been able to control such a potential platform. Quick and innovative reforms are expected of it to serve its customers alike, if it wants to be seen as a serious competitor to Apple in years to come.

Don't forget to watch Jelly Bean in action at the Google I/O Conference on June 27.
