How to Activate Keyboard Swipe Feature in Samsung Galaxy S III

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:20 PM PDT

If you are using Samsung Galaxy S3 phone then you might miss the awesome feature called Swipe which automatically predicts the word you want to type once you swipe your fingers on keyboard. The main advantage of this feature is typing speed becomes really fast. By default this feature is not activated on phone and people may get confused with the "Keyboard swipe" option given in Samsung keyboard setting.

Note: By checking box next to "Keyboard swipe" won't help you to get started with Swipe feature. This option is to switch between letters and symbols.

Here is a way to activate Swipe feature in Galaxy S3:

Go to Menu->Settings->Language and Input-> Samsung Keyboard settings.

Turn on the "Predictive text" feature by moving the slider next to it. Now check the box next to “Continuous input” option.

That's it. Now type any new message, you'll be provided a guide page which shows how you can enter text by sliding fingers across keyboard.

This feature is only available for few applications and message. You can't use it in your browser to type. But if you are an avid message sender then this is a nice time saver for you. You can always check third party apps for adding Swipe feature on your phone's keyboard.

Lava Xolo X900: Intel’s First Android Smartphone Is Here

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 03:53 AM PDT

Intel has made a grand entry in the smartphone world with Lava Xolo X900 which boasts of being the first smartphone with an intel atom processor in it. With powerful specs and impressive performance all around, this could be the catapult that Lava International Ltd. has been waiting for.

It has got most of its ingredients right with premium quality display with Corning Gorilla glass protection, lagless UI, great camera and good battery backup. Currently on Gingerbread 2.3.7 and should be easily upgradable to ICS looking at its mammoth 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom processor with Hyper Threading which makes multitasking very easy and most of the applications run without a flaw. The highlight has been the dedicated 400 Mhz PowerVR SGX540 GPU which more than meets the gaming requirements of both avid and casual gamers.

The look and feel of the phone is solid and it surely has drawn its inspiration from Apple's iphone 4 and LG's Optimus series. The front of the phone houses a 4.03" WSVGA (1024×600) screen which corresponds to about 300ppi. The screen looks great and touch sensitivity is top notch as expected from a device in this category. A 1.3MP front facing is placed above the screen. Below the screen are 4 capacitive touch buttons which are fairly responsive.

As far other specs are concerned it has 16 GB of internal storage along with 1 GB RAM which says that intel has been following the smartphone market intimately and surely knows what the users desire.

The 8MP rear camera does a good job that also takes 10 shots in less than a minute at 15 fps in Burst mode. There are different scene mode such as Auto, Sports, Portrait, Landscape, Night, Night Portrait, Fireworks and Text.

Final Verdict:

The XOLO X900 proves that Intel can have a compelling offering running on the Android platform. As their first device, the X900 does not break any records but offers a stable, almost pure Android experience on a platform which performs as well as any other out there. Due to the architecture change, there will be compatibility issues even though Intel has worked to minimize this. It is now best available in the market for Rs. 20,220.

First OTA Update for Samsung Galaxy S III Released [Not in India]

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 12:16 AM PDT

Finally good news for all the fortunate buyers of Samsung’s flagship phone Galaxy S 3. Samsung starts pushing the first software update of this device. This update is based on stability of device which is mentioned as “improved stability” in the change log.

Looks like this update is not pushed for device holders of all the countries such as India because I can’t see any software update on my phone. Users at UK reported that they have updated their devices and haven’t seen any big change in the user experience because phone is already stable at large extent.

To check whether update is available for your device, you have to go to Settings -> About Device -> Software Update. If the update is available then don’t forget it to update on Wi-Fi instead of using cellular data as you’ll be charged for that.

Seeing software update in such a small time span is very appreciating. Hope to see more updates in future. Kudos to Samsung!

Must Have Accessories For Samsung Galaxy SIII

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 11:27 PM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S III has had an extremely successful launch worldwide. It has quickly become one of the, if not the most talked about and sought after smart phones today. It is a common knowledge that when a device becomes popular, so does the demand of it;s accessories. So here we show you few things that would help you to get more out of your Galaxy SIII. I bet lot of you did not even know these accessories existed.

Galaxy S3 Desktop Dock: This is an interesting add on to your smart phone. It lets you dock the device and make it stand vertically. It also had a 3.5 mm headset jack which lets you take an audio output from the phone. As a bonus, the device also gets charged while it is docked. A very handy and a must have accessory to your phone. Here is the video to show you the dock in action.

Galaxy S3 Flip Cover:  Yes, a flip cover. And no, no lawsuits so far by Apple. But, the Samsung Galaxy SIII has a beautiful display and we must protect it from scratches and marks. This is exactly the function of the smart cover. Additionally, it only adds to the visual beauty of your device.

Galaxy S3 Wi-Fi Display Hub: This is definitely one of the for the sake of convenience accessory. A WiFi hub lets you directly stream videos and music to a supported TV. It is not a necessity but just in case you have some extra cash lying around to blow, go ahead wand enjoy things on a bigger screen.

Galaxy S3 Holder and Battery Charger: This is another luxury accessory. It lets you charge your spare battery if you have any for the Galaxy SIII. It also lets you hold the smartphone in the slot nicely so that it is just not lying around anywhere.

Galaxy S3 C-Pen: The C pen is in my opinion one accessory we can well do with. The Galaxy Note showed that on a giant screen how much more does having a pen(stylus) add to the over all functionality of the device. It lets you quickly take notes and make sketches and painting right on the device itself. In my opinion, the C pen should have been shipped with the device itself.

All these accessories can be easily picked up from the nearby local stores or even from websites such as Ebay. There maybe a lot more such accessories that could be available for the Samsung Galaxy SIII. Do let us know if you find any more of such in the comments section below.

Top New Features Of iOS 6

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 10:40 PM PDT

Like most of us had anticipated iOS 6 was announced by Apple at the WWDC on june 11th. A lot has been made out as to how the conference did not really live up to its billing but with iOS 6 on board we have a few new very interesting enhancements to the operating system of the iPhone. Here we tell you in brief what all are these new features.

Siri: Yes we know siri is an old news but finally with iOS 6 we are beginning to see the real power of Siri. It now can tell you the latest scores from a baseball or even tell a batsmans batting average. Siri can also compare two sports players  for height and various other attributes. The list of restaurants has got a little more informative in case you wish to ask Siri best places to eat. It can also launch applications directly. So all and all we are seeing Siri becoming a lot more capable than being just a mere gimmick. Also, with iOS 6, Siri would be available for the new iPad.

Facebook Integration: We did anticipate Facebook would be deeply integrated into iOS and our calculated guess was correct. Just like twitter, Facebook is also a massive part of iOS now making things such as photo sharing and updating status a lot easier. Twitter saw a massive jump in its following after jumping on board with iOS so it seems like Facebook is only following a tried and tested path. Also with a single log in your contacts, calendars and events would now be easily synchronized with Facebook. A case of maybe overstating of data? Well that’s for another time.

Safari upgrade: Safari, the mobile browser on iOS has undergone an update too. It is now synced with the cloud service that is iCloud meaning you will be able to resume your browsing session with the tabs from just any idevice once you enter your apple ID. This is indeed handly for some of us who own multiple apple products like an iPad and the iPhone.

A VIP inbox: A new inbox called the VIP inbox has been included in the mail now. As a result if you assign a contact to be a VIP their mails would show here. This is very similar to how google handles star contacts in its popular mailing service called gmail. It brings all your important mails such as those that you must respond to urgently at one place.

Ability To Reject calls with message: This was a feature most of us were calling out for ages. Android and Windows Phone 7 both have call rejecting with messages well built in. But Apple has finally jumped on the wagon now. If you are in the middle of something you can reject the call with a polite text. Also you can now just decline the call and the phone will remind you to call back the number once you are out of that location hence making sure you do not forget about the call you missed.

Maps: iOS seems to have moved on from Google maps. It seems like apple have their own mapping technology on board now. As a result of this turn by turn navigation is now a reality. Another leaf out of Nokia’s book we presume. Also a lot of cities are now rendered in 3D making the maps and places look a lot more realistic. This is again very similar to the recently announced maps by Google. However, we are pretty sure that these maps will not be available in an offline mode.

Interface changes: The app store, iTunes and the iPod have all undergone slight ui redesigns to make the the use experience even better. In all honesty at least as far as the iPod is concerned we proffered the older look to the more subtle and monochromic new one.

So those were the major seven new features of the new iOS. In total there are more than 100 new features added but these are the ones that are most important. So which of these features are you most excited about? Do let us know as your comments are valuable to us.

5 Things That We Hate In An iPhone

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 10:32 PM PDT

Even the most successful smartphone is not without it’s fair share of criticism and drawbacks. We bring out the reasons why people sometimes are forced to hate the iPhone despite it  arguably being the most amazing device ever produced.

1. Presence of a dormant bluetooth.

In this age of sharing and transferring images, files, music from one device to another, people still don’t get it why an iPhone is so stubborn when it comes to transferring and receiving data to and from other devices. It is almost every second or third day that you might like a wallpaper or ringtone on your buddy’s cellphone and might want it as well. But if you are carrying an iPhone around you might feel as helpless as a newborn kid. Now if its a common man who is unaware of jailbreaks and cool apps that power an iphone it bites him even harder as he thinks that he spent so much on a phone that can’t even transfer files via Bluetooth which is so common these days. Although some apps claim to be able to transfer files to other devices they never seem to work. It only works for transferring data between idevices. Now that’s killer attitude and users are hating it.

2. Over dependence on iTunes.

iTunes is the godfather of an iPhone. You want songs, videos, apps or create a backup, whatever the case iTunes is the hero. But you can’t depend so much on one software. When you are at a relatives house or somewhere else and you need to transfer some songs to your Phone or sync your phone you might not be able to do so if they don’t have iTunes installed in their machine. Sometimes you even need iTunes just to start your phone if it encounters a major problem and won’t power on. Now that’s bad.

3. Absence of ‘undo’ option in notes.

An amazing auto correct feature makes the simple notes app a hit but the absence of an  ’undo’ option can be quite irritating at times. To aggravate the situation there is also nothing that asks you whether you want to save changes or not. Now if you have modified an existing note and want to get back the previous one, sorry to say but you are stuck. Now this happens even If you don’t press the done button. That’s strange and a problem.

4. Inability to play Flash videos.
Political case or whatever, users bear the brunt of high level clashes. Probably the most famous drawback of an iPhone is its inability to play flash videos. It has been openly criticized and made fun of because of this shortcoming.

5. No inbuilt sharing option (in photos) to social networking sites.
The worlds going social these days. Networking sites have become a part and parcel of our lives and almost eveything we do and achieve we like to share it with our friends and family over the net. So absence of a ‘share on facebook’ or ‘ share on twitter’ pinches.

But even with these shortcomings,  my personal view is- ‘ iPhone is great. Everyone should have one!’ Lets hope that these drawbacks won’t be seen in the upcoming versions which are coming up quite fast.

How to Remove Facebook Timeline Completely

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 10:22 PM PDT

Some of us truly hate the facebook timeline. We really had a heartbreak the very day timeline was made compulsory for everyone using facebook. Some of the users even deactivated facebook accounts because of the timeline feature. Timeline made it extrememly easy for people to stalk your entire life on Facebook. it became rather easy for everyone who was never a friend in 2009 to go through and read all your posts. It kind of killed the meaning of privacy for a lot of people.

So we decided its high time this feature should be disabled. there are plenty of tutorials on the web that promise to deactivate timeline but honestly speaking not many of them work. One of the methods that worked for us more often than not is here. This  is a guide to remove facebook timeline. We do recommend you to back up your browsing data and everything else before you try this just in case something goes wrong. So lets quickly tell you the steps:

  1. Open your Firefox browser
  2. Install User Agent Switcher Add-on in it.
  3. Once it has installed, restart your browser.
  4. Navigate to tools.
  5. Then Default User Agent.
  6. Then Internet Explorer and Choose Internet Explorer 7.
  7. Now login to your Facebook Account.
  8. Open your Profile page.
  9. It will open in the older layout but you may get additional white spaces in it.
  10. To remove these spaces just install FB Purity Extension in your browser.
  11. That's it! Just refresh and your old profile layout is back!!

So that was a very simple way of getting rid of Timeline. Did this method work for you? Do let us know in the comments section below.

Eurosport For iOS Is A Must Download For All Sports Lovers

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 10:03 PM PDT

If you are a sports lover you are gonna absolutely love the application we are about to cover. We are in the middle of probably one of the greatest sporting marathons ever. Euro 2012, Olympics, Wimbledon, new football season and plenty of cricket action as well as formula one is just around the corner. So in such a busy schedule for sports you are bound to miss out on a few important matches. But we have you well covered so that you are kept updated with all the scores with the wonderful application that is Eurosport for iOS.

Eurosport is one of the most popular websites for keeping a live track of various sporting events happening. However in my humble view, the iOS version of the application is just as good if not better. The UI is extremely slick and easy to use. I would say it is beautiful too. There are no complications and any noob who is using it for the first time also will find his way around extremely easily. Eurosport allows you to set your favorites from the wide world of sports and select the types of alerts you would like to receive. For example, if I set my favorite team to Manchester united and enable all alerts, I would get alerts for every united game and score changes as well as scores at half time and full time. This is extremely handy as these push notifications help you track the score and are very much real time.

You do obviously need an Internet connection to be receiving the updates. However, the service is absolutely free and does not eat away a lot of your bandwidth. As a result we feel this is a much better way to go than subscribe to your favorite teams website for alerts which would also charge you a premium amount. You can also read various big stories from the world of sports when you open the application. The alerts too are very customizable and you can put them to silent too so that you are not disturbed when in the middle of something. It is highly recommended that you download this application and customize it to alert you for your favorite sporting event since its easy and handy. You can download the application from here.

Hope this application would have solved the problem of plenty of sports enthusiasts like me out there. It’s a total boon for keeping scores tracked on the go. How did you find this app review? Do let us know in the comments below.

Top Alternatives To Instagram On Android

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 08:24 PM PDT

Since its arrival in the play store, instagram has been a huge success. With its easy to apply filters and borders it has won many hearts including mine. However, its a very love it or hate it affair. Whatever the case is, read on as we tell you some of the popular and not so popular alternatives to Instagram.

Pixlr-O-Matic: An Instagram clone, it is directed to those fans of instagram's simple UI but are done with limited filters in instagram. A direct comparison, instagram has 18 filters, 2 focusing tools(point focus and tilt shift) and borders to give that retro look. How about doing more with pixlr-O-Matic's 68 filters, 73 lighting effects and 193 borders.
Once customized the photo can be uploaded to all the common social platforms as well as pixlr's imgur.com clone named imm.io.

Hipstamatic:  It is so close to Instagram that they actually share a network. So when you take a photo on Hipstamatic, you can choose to push it to Instagram. The new deal with Facebook makes this sibling relationship a lot more interesting.

Hipster: Just like instagram, hipster offers a bunch of great pre-configured filters and border combinations. But unlike instagram, it allows one to add text over photo. The pictures can then be shared online or with hipsters community.

Lightbox photos: with lightbox one has the choice to make individual  photo private or public, unlike instagram. Also one can link their facebook and twitter accounts to see photos from friends without having a lightbox account. This has been reportedly been acquired by Facebook too, so in a lot of regions pulled away from the Play Store. In the ones remaining, you should download it.

Vignette: Vignette offers a complete suit to apply a multitude of effects, 76 to be exact with 57 borders in any combination. While instagram is limited to retro or vintage types of filters with vignette on can also have LOMO, Polaroid, toy camera type effects. Further, instagram lowers your resolution of final images while vignette applies them to full sized images.

Individual settings can be saved as shortcuts on your home screen and pictures be directly clicked from there.

Streemzoo: The closest thing to an instagram clone, the app has great filters and affects. But this doesn't stop at photos. Why to when you can upload videos too!

Some of the other popular alternatives you can try are: picplz, picYou, molome, TaDaa and EyeEm.

I hope we have bought you a detailed enough list to choose an alternate just in case you do not want to go with Instagram which honestly would be hard to believe. Please leave your comments in the section below.

Blogtechnika would like to express heartfelt gratitude towards Mr. Ankur Jangra for his immense contribution towards this post.

How To Download S60 Applications For Free

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 08:11 PM PDT

With the brilliant Symbian OS, Nokia serves a varied range of apps, Symbian S60 is one of the most popular software platforms for the phone. The S60 is more of an OS for phone than a smartphone. Various apps are available to make your experience with the S60 phones worthwhile. Nokia provided an in-built app shop called Download! service to download apps and games for most of Nokia S60 phones. With time like everything moves on, and Download is now the popular application store the Ovi Store.

So where do we find good and compatible apps for s60 phones for free? There are multiple solutions to this. The Nokia Ovi Store is usually first choice of people to look for free Nokia apps. Whatever games or apps you are looking for can be found at this place. It is one of the best options to look for free apps, games and themes. Also, for phones without Wi-Fi or 3G connections the Ovi Store allows you to download apps which are free only.

There are more than 2000 free S60 apps, games and themes which can be downloaded for free for your phone which include many utility and GPS system software, e-mail and social networking client apps and more. All these can be downloaded from various websites.

I will help you search few places where you would find good applications. One of the most known places is Getjar. This is the perfect place to find all the Symbian apps, themes, data and games for free. There are various blogs which share apps and related information too. Few of them are enlisted below.

Free Symbian Applications

Download Mobile Apps

The two other popular websites include the following:

Symbian-freeware: This shares almost 2000 Symbian applications, themes and games.

Last but not the least and the most counted website is the Nokia Ovi Store which supports and purveys all genuine and tamper free data and applications. The link for the same is Ovi Store.

Once you are done downloading the application, your job is nearly half done. All you have to do now is to connect your phone to the PC, and transfer the .jar file usually that you have downloaded to either the external or internal memory of your device. Disconnect your phone and go to the location on the phone where you copied the app on phone and just click on the options and install. The application if compatible with your device will now be installed and ready to run.

Though I definitely won't suggest you to go for the free applications or download paid applications from different clients for free, because I will always prefer people to support developers by buying applications which you find handy and beneficial. Also this data which you fetch is completely genuine and trustworthy and wont crop up any issues with usability or accessibility. But honestly it is always better to keep looking for open source stuff rather than paid, binding material, especially when they serve more or less the same purpose.

This might help you serve your needs. Try them and do let us know how do you find them. Your comments are always welcome.

Blogtechnika would like to extend heartfelt gratitude towards Ms. Neha Nagwekar for her immense contribution towards this post.
